Church Shooting South Carolina
Active Shooter on Loose
Authorities have confirmed to a representative of CGPGMG, the nations leading active shooter prevention training company, that several people were killed or injured in a shooting inside a church in Charleston, South Carolina. Authorities are reporting that several people have been shot during a Wednesday night bible study (approximately eight but reports are not able to be validated at this reporting) in a “horrific shooting scene.” This took place at; The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church.” ANOTHER CHURCH SHOOTING!
The historic African-American church, located in Charleston, South Carolina is the site of yet another unthinkable event at the time of this report which is 2300 hours, central standard time, June 17, 2015.
Lockdown is in place at several adjacent locations to ensure no other casualties occur while a manhunt is on the way for the shooter. There has also been a bomb threat made on the church and authorities are taking no chances. It is believed eight people have been killed and one injured with possible others injured or deceased but authorities will not not confirm the details. “It’s really bad. It’s a very bad scene,” according to the local pastor, Thomas Dixon. Mayor confirms; “all stops will be removed” to find this individual who carried out this heinous act. The FBI is being called in and it is being investigated as a hate crime.
According to witnesses, a man entered the weekly, Wednesday night bible study, held in the basement, and opened fire and then left the scene. The suspect is still at-large. He is described by witnesses and police as a white male, in his early 20’s, sandy blonde hair, wearing a grey sweatshirt, possible smaller style build, clean shaven, wearing blue jeans and timberland boots. While one source says a man fitting that description was taken into custody, police say they are still looking for the shooter.
Police officials have requested anyone with information or witness to this tragedy to please call 911 immediately with ANY information.
Far too often we think of these incidents as isolated and ones that “will never happen here;” until they do! There are far too many shootings in this county labeled “active shooter events” and subject matter experts need to be more involved to mitigate these types of risks. Employee prevention techniques and policy|procedure details need to be accounted for with common sense planning for reduction of incidents. These need to go well beyond teaching fighting and mental preparation standards, it is more of a “deep dive” into the psychology of an event, shooter, people inside and location. Learning the culture of each and every facility, corporate office, church and public safety buildings are the beginning of a quality written survey and production of a well documented plan. Following this type of process, appropriate risk analysis and plans can be employed to not only reduce these risks, bust most importantly, save lives and help others; says Chris Grollnek. If you do not come to CGPGMG, go somewhere, just make sure that “somewhere” is qualified to help.
More often than not, these locations become major news for events like these because of the “safe environment” they provide. As the Dallas PD HQ demonstrated less than one week ago, these mass murderers do not discriminate by target location. Everyplace is vulnerable but should not be paralyzed by fear. It is an equal balance of planning and understanding the real risks. People continue to demonstrate, those who wish to harm others will and do pick anyplace and anywhere. Therefore, it is our duty as citizens to gain the best strategies available to reduce these liabilities. We send our deepest condolences and prayers for the families involved. Further, we offer any and all information that CGPGMG can to assist with this post incident if needed. Most of these offering are on the site at no charge!
It is important to note that these events, while tragic and hopelessly senseless are fluid situations and it is likely reports of another shooter were given. One way or the other, when the lockdown is released of surrounding locations, police will be confident they have the correct person in custody.
About Active Shooter Events
Active shooter events are dynamic in nature and there is no profile of an active shooter. Hate crime or not, the bottom line is this was an active event that stretched the resources of normal operations of a city, town and even country. The typical motive is easy to dismiss as crazy but more often than not, they (the shooters) are “righting a perceived wrong” against them. At least that is how the majority who survive explain their actions aside from “voices in their head.” Shooters range from five year old girls to 85 year old men. These incidents are over in under seven minutes by national average and police response times are typically 14 to 17 minutes by virtue of travel time. It is why CGPGMG offers so many free training programs for everyone who they deem are the true first responders. There are several free training videos on the site www.cgpgmg.com and links to free training and planning guides.
Chris Grollnek is one of very few people to have been involved in two active shooter incidents domestically who went on to get a post graduate degree in the phenomena of active shooter events. One event was as a police officer in 2010 at the McKinney Police Department (while on duty) and one as a husband and father (on vacation) in 2011 driving on Cape Canaveral Blvd in Florida to Ron Johns Surf Shop.
